Goodwin visits The Alliance as he seeks re-election

North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance Wayne Goodwin will speak to members of National Agents Alliance during its “MISSION” LeadCon16 event on July 23 at the company’s headquarters in Burlington, N.C.

Goodwin, who is seeking re-election for a third term as the state’s insurance commissioner, has visited The Alliance during many of its annual national conventions in Raleigh, N.C. and leadership conferences in Burlington, N.C.

Goodwin is excited about his prospects heading into November’s election.

“I remain committed to protecting the people of North Carolina through fair and reasonable insurance regulation, while also promoting a vibrant and competitive business community,” Goodwin said in a press release. “I’m seeking re-election because North Carolinians need a successful fighter in their corner—someone who stands up for them and not the special interests.”

In November 2008, North Carolina voters elected Goodwin as the first new Commissioner of Insurance in 24 years. Goodwin is a staunch advocate for preserving state regulatory rights, fighting the federal government on multiple fronts as Congress has tried to reduce state government authority on insurance regulation.

A native of Hamlet, N.C., Goodwin is from a family active in agriculture and banking. He excelled in Richmond County public schools, becoming the first Morehead Scholar and William Randolph Hearst/U.S. Senate Scholar from Richmond Senior High and attending Governor’s School in mathematics.

Goodwin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with honors in political science. He then went on to graduate from the UNC School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree, working at the Institute of Government during his studies. Returning to his native Richmond County, he worked in private legal practice for 13 years and started three successful small businesses.

In 1996, Wayne was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives and represented Richmond, Scotland, Montgomery and Stanly counties for four terms. Wayne was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Insurance and Assistant State Fire Marshal for North Carolina in 2005, before being elected Insurance Commissioner in 2008.

During his professional and political careers, Goodwin has received many accolades and awards; among them are: the “A+ Legislator Award” from the NC Association of Educators (NCAE); the “Leadership in Government Award” from NC Common Cause; the “Jim Long Award” from the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program; and, the “Defender of Justice Award” from the NC Justice Center. Goodwin has also served as Vice Chairman of Southeast Zone of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and the chairman of various consumer protection-related committees on the national level.

Goodwin is a member of the Kiwanis Club and various civic, non-profit and other boards, and is a past director for the Methodist Home for Children. Wayne and his wife, Melanie live in Raleigh with their children, Madison and Jackson.
